Image transformation, as one of the hot research topics in Image-Based Rendering field, has enjoyed a wide application in Virtual Environment construction. This paper starts by reviewing the approaches to VE modeling and rendering in Computer Graphics and the related fields. It then describes the development of Image-Based Modeling and Rendering techniques based on which the principle of image morphing and warping (IM & IW) is introduced. Next, this paper surveys into all notable transforming methods and proposes a framework for IM & IW-based VE building. After the study of key techniques in 2D IM, this paper implements a Field Morphing algorithm to create VE for a walkthrough purpose, its mapping function, control process and programming scheme are presented. Following 2D IM study, the research is carried on to 3D field in which an important warping function is used to derive the IW method for a "box-like" structured scene. Methods are devised for measuring the camera focal length in order to obtain the pixel depth value. And in combined with another 3D transform approach-Tour into Picture (TIP), this paper proposes a TIWP method for VE construction that utilizes the accuracy of IW with the convenience of quick rendering provided by TIP. Solutions to visibility problems and to image reconstruction issues are discussed for 2D and 3D image transformation respectively...
