This paper propose a improvement method of MZTE ,adopted in MPEG-4 for encoding stilltexture. Firstly,the basic conception of image/video compression is provi-ded,and then the conception of wavelet decomposing and fractal predictive encoding , lastly, MZTE and it's improvement is illuminated detailedly.The kernel of improvement is that fractal predictive encoding is imported into MZTE,and wavelet coefficient is encoded in ZTE mode or in fractal mode according to in which mode the encoding error is minimum. In order to import fractal into MZTE, we need to expand the conception of wavelet tree. In this improvement method ,the root of wavelet tree may be located in any frequency band ,and it may not be a single coefficient ,but a coefficient block.we can always get a better compression quality than MZTE's by using the improved method,In lower encoding layer ,the quality of this method is better than MZTE ob-viously,and in higher layer ,it is similative to MZTE.Though complexity of this method is higher than MZTE's, it will not be a big problem with the enhancement of capability of computer.The experiment shows that this improvement method achieves it's target.
