In our modern life, there are plenty of video products produced every day. The abundance of video contents and formats makes this media to be the most important media in various medias. Yet video is not as structuralized as text, this defect prevents the application of video. In order to solve the problem, researchers proposed the solution scheme of "video content structuralizing". This technique is divided into three layers, such as low, medium, high layer of video structuralizing. Shot detection is one of the key technologies of lower layer; a good shot detection method may be the fundamental of excellent video analysis. In this paper, we studied fully and systematically on this technology. Our main contributions are as follows:1. Adaptive Shot detection method is proposed here for veracity and celerity. Three aspects are included here, such as adaptability of various video formats, adaptive framework of shot detection and adaptability of threshold setting.2. A evaluation model of various shot detection methods is proposed here, while we can evaluate different shot detection methods under the guidance of this model.3. Various shot detection methods in decompressed domain are studied. We realize shot detection based on two methods, such as color histogram difference and pixel-based domain.4. Various shot detection methods in Mpeg-compress domain are studied. We improve and realize an approach for shot segmentation using MPEG compressed data, including abrupt and gradual shot detection.5. Some of those proposed shot detection methods are realized and applied to content-based video retrieval system; experiments prove that they are effective.
