With the development of Internet and the coming of the post-PC era, the embedded systems is becoming the center of interest in the IT industry and bringing along a large market. Meanwhile, the wide embedded applications calls for better performance and functionality of embedded systems. 8/16-bit microcontrollers can't meet the speed and memory demand of the Internet embedded devices. Due to the rapid development of integrated circuits (IC) technology, the embedded technology based on 32-bit RISC processors is becoming much more popular. How to select a reasonable hardware/software platform and design an excellent integrated platform for multifunctional embedded applications is the focus of this thesis.The problem of managing the network composed of embedded devices is catching more attention in that the number of multifunctional embedded devices is becoming increasingly large. The realization of network management for embedded devices is the main results of this thesis.ARM is the industry's leading provider of 32-bit embedded RISC microprocessors with almost 75% of the market. ARM offers a wide range of processor cores based on a common architecture and delivering high performance together with low power consumption and system cost. In this thesis, we developed an embedded device platform based on the ARM7TDMI processor and successfully port the uClinux operation system (OS) to our platform, on which the SNMP is realized. We summarize our work as follows:1. Designed an integrated platform for multifunctional embedded applications with our own IP (Intellectual Property). Based on this platform, a lot of embedded applications can be realized, such as network management, VPN, WWW services, etc. Through the design procedure, we sum up guidelines and design methodologies for the selection of the hardware platform and operation system for embedded systems.2. Solved the problem of porting the uClinux OS. We ported the uClinux OS to the ARM hardware platform. The compiled uClinux core and the file system totals less than 700K.3. On the basis of the embedded system we developed, the network management function is realized based on the SNMP. This feature enables us to realize effective monitoring and managment for the embedded device in the network, so as to keep the network efficient and stable.The results of this thesis have been used as a testbed for the embedded systems in our lab for the purpose of product development and classroom instruction.
