It will be imperative under the situation that we build more and more speedways to realize the vehicle identification and intelligent management. The vehicle style and the vehicle plate recognition systems are important parts of the system of automatic charging in speedway toll stations. Based on the technology of recognizing images and character, the vehicle style and license plate recognition system is one of the focused researches on application of pattern recognition.In this article, some new algorithms and methods are introduced in such stages as preprocessing of images, classification of characteristics and character recognition and vehicle style recognition.For example, Firstly, the BAM neural network is used to recognize the vehicle style, The trains of thought is concise, the learning is simple, rapid, the method is feasibleSecondly, color edge detector ColorPrewitt is used to locate the vehicle license plate with high location ratio.Thirdly, decrease the difficulty of the character recognition through studying the method of character preprocessing;At last, some effective methods of feature extraction, such as the one based on image transform with the invariant features which keep stable while the picture move, rotate and zoom in or out, and the other focused on the shape of character and features of direction. Experiment result indicates that the minimum-distance-matching algorithm used in the recognition system of character is reliable and efficient. Meanwhile, the current situation of the research project and a practical car license plate recognition system are introduced in detail.
