The requirement of measuring elliptic pore size exists in lots of areas, such as fine mechanism, optical engineering, biomedical engineering, industrial production etc. The way which is widely used now is contact method like micrometer and non-contact one like air micrometer. But they have many disadvantages, including small scope, low precision, low distinguishability, inefficiency, and easy to bring human error. In this article, an automatic elliptic pore size measuring system is developed based on digital image processing techniques, in which, CCD camera grabs the microscopic image of to-be-measured end surface, video image grabber digitizes it and computer processes it by way of digital image processing and gives the result. This system can replace traditional elliptic pore size measuring method due to its efficiency and high precision. It can measure various elliptic and circular pores, calculate parameters, locate center point and give out-of-roundness, which meet demands of many areas. Users can adopt elliptic measuring method to circles for higher precision if need. In this system, many algorithms have been studied on image preprocessing, manipulation and elliptic parameter calculation according to pore image characteristics, which improve the whole system performance and can be used for reference by similar machines. With the system, a function library is offered which can be used for further development.
