Internet is recognized as an open system that provides opportunities for publishing and disseminating information globally and becomes a giant distributed and unstructured information space involving various information including science and technology, culture, business, news and entertainment, and etc. A study on web information resources and their retrieval is very necessary in facilitating the access of useful in formation smoothly and precisely via Internet as well as improving the two-way development of social information and information socialization.The paper defines the web information resources and analyzes their types, characteristics and accessing obstacles. The information resources concerning academic research are sum up to 8 types, namely, on-line databases, OPAC, electronic books, electronic journals, electronic newspapers, web resources guidance and search engines, education and training information and electronic forum. And then the author discusses the characteristics of American and Chinese on line databases and their developing situations, and introduces such large datasets as DIALOG, STN, EBSCOHost and OCLC FirstSearch in this part, the author also takes MEDLINE as an example. In the following part, in order to help the users access information smoothly, the author begins with the characteristics of electronic books, journals and newspapers and introduces their retrieval and browsing methods. Due to the different formats of electronic books, the users have to read them with the help of reading softwares .So several popular electronic softwares are introduced. In the last part, the author analyzes the types and principles of WWW, a hyper-text information retrieving tool, and sums up the characteristics of some search engines most in use by means of tables. Taking Google as an example, the author also looks forward to the future of the developing trend of search engines. The paper has six parts, including 31, 635 words at text, 21 charts and 4 tables.
