Murals are the key cultural relics of Dunhuang Grotto, which are of great value in history and culture. Because Dunhuang Grotto locates the Gobi area having atrocious weather, murals are threatened by many diseases and turn to very frail. So it becomes more and more important to protect and restore them. Digital protecting and virtual restoring murals exploits new methods and proposes effective tools. Digitalized methods are efficient and repeatable, and do not break cultural relics. They break through the limitations of physical methods and lead a new direction of the protection and restoration of murals. This thesis presents a series of methods for digitalized protection and virtual restoration of murals. According to the research of mural pigment, the experiential knowledge of artists and archeologists and some well-proctected murals, synthetically applying chromatics, graphics, image processing and AL, murals can be virtually restored and color changing simulated. Virtual restoration is to restore some color-changed, color-faded, or part-shedded murals. Color evolvement simulation is to simulate the progress of disease occurring and being dilapidated effected by environmental elements. Although traditional image processing covers many classical image recovery methods, we find these methods are limited in mural image recovery, for it is not consider the knowledge of the domain, or physical or chemical models of murals, or the restrictions of the domain. Therefore, based on image processing, we create a series of improved methods by introduting knowledge analogy, regrading the experiential knowledge of experts and experimental knowledge obtained from many experiments as constraints. Thus the results are more natural and credible. The innovation of this thesis is that it proposes intelligent simulation based on visualization, integrating the AT with the traditional image processing. At present, this new image processing techniques based on knowledge discribed in the thesis, have been applies to Dunhuang mural virtural restoration and evolvement simulation. The archetypal system has been developed successfully. We are satisfied with most of the results.The achievement was shown in the EXPO2000 in Hanover, Germany, and several research papers was published in sorts of periodicals and congresses of the world. There are still some inperfection in current research which need us to explore more in the future.
