Taking up the task of designing and realizing video detection of traffic flow and vehicle recognition system based on the technology of video and image processing, this thesis researches into the technology of monitoring traffic flow and traffic condition by means of video detection and recognition. It first provides the background information of the video detection of traffic flow and vehicle recognition system, as well as the current research and application of this technology in our country and abroad, showing the significance and the prospect of this system. Then, it introduces the principle of using image recognition technology to detect and recognize objects. Moreover, it compares and analyzes the problems that exist in image processing, such as image filtering and noise reduction, image sharpening, image enhancement, image segmentation, feature pick-up and object recognition. By comparison and analysis, it establishes the basic method of calculation that will be adopted in the design and realization of the system. Finally, it presents the design of video detection of traffic flow and vehicle recognition system. By adopting Visual C++6.0, Matlab 5.2, Power Builder 6.0, and Sybase Database as the software platform to develop this system, it has realized part of the major functions of this system. Simulated test shows that the design of the system is rational, and the method of calculation is feasible.The major characteristics of this thesis are as follows:1. Based on the analysis and comparison of the common methods of calculation in image processing, it finds out the practical and effective method of calculation, which fits the characteristic of this system. At the same time, it presents some tentative ideas in improving some of the methods of calculation. 2. After researching in image recognition, and according to the characteristics of the moving traffic objects, it introduces the method of recognition based on the characteristics of object moments. 3. It also proposes a method of supervised learning to train the decision function and provides the corresponding method of calculation to realize it. 4. It has completed the design of the video traffic flow detection and vehicle recognition system, and realized part of its functions.5. It has presented an approach of setting up object detecting zones and speed detecting areas, realizing the instant counting of the vehicles and recording of the vehicle speed. At present, researching into the technology of video detection of traffic flow and vehicle recognition is of great significance to improving the level of scientific management of city traffic in our country and promoting the modernization of road traffic construction.
