The commercial LED driving power supplies inevitably exist ripple current. Many previous studies have found that ripple current will affect the performance of LED. Research on ripple current can give guidance to LED driver circuit design to simplify circuit design and save circuit cost. Meanwhile, LED still can maintain its excellent performance as far as possible. In this paper, the influence of ripple current on the LED efficacy is investigated from five aspects including waveform, amplitude, frequency, DC offset and ambient temperature. In addition, the influences on different LEDs are compared. From the point of LED droop effect, through the pulse heating experiment data and numerical simulation to establish the numerical simulation model, quantitative analysis was carried out on the ripple effect thereby. Finally, the physical mechanism of the impact of ripple current on the LED performance is discussed.
