In recent years, the developments of smart grid applications have driven the demands of PLC (power line communication) chip, making it must be a high reliability and high speed system. While PLC technique is affected by it channel characteristic such as frequency-selective fading and narrow-band interference problems, so it is not quite suit for signal transmission.OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) is a method for data transmission with high spectral efficiency, and ability to cope with frequency-selective fading due to multipath and narrowband, and it has developed into a popular scheme for wideband digital communication, whether wireless or over copper wires, used in applications such as digital television and audio broadcasting, DSL broadband internet access, wireless networks, and4G mobile communications. By using the bit allocation technique the OFDM system performance can be optimized. In this paper a system plan base on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and bit allocation is proposed. System simulations on matlab and hardware system design are finished to investigate the performance of the plan. The field communication test results show that this plan is feasible and can improve PLC system performance. Based on the simulations and tests, the PLC chip architecture is proposed for the ASIC implementation.
