The conversion efficiency, stability and lifetime of semiconductor lasers are directly affected by the performance of Semiconductor laser diode (LD) driver. Linear power supply has been widely used in the LD driver because of its low ripple and high stability, but its conversion efficiency is low. Although switching mode power supply has many advantages, such as high efficiency, easy to control and small size, it has been restricted in high pulse power LD driving fields because of its large ripple, high noise, and slow transient response. In this paper, based on the research of characteristics of LD and the conventional switching power supply, a new high-power and high efficiency LD power supply is designed, which has both academic and practical value.Firstly, the principles and characteristics of LD were studied and the requirements of the laser driver are analyzed and summarized, a practical LD driver was completed and was applied to our research project. Secondly, the overall driver structure and the critical circuit design are briefly analyzed; theoretical analysis and detailed circuit design of the new current pulse LD driver were focused on. Topology, small-signal modeling and relative test results were included. To improve the output power and the dynamic performance of driving and reduce the switching ripple, a novel interleaved multiple-phase top topology was selected to resolve the low conversion efficiency of conventional SMPS fundamentally. More importantly, modularization is easily implemented because the structure and circuit parameters of multiple phases are the same.Under the practical running condition system requirements are all satisfied, Effectiveness of this high power and high conversion efficiency driver was verified, so this design laid the foundation for the application of specific areas.
