The existing railway adjusting of plane and vertical section is one of the main methods to ensure a smooth and safe driving. The optimal design of existing railway adjusting can improve the adjusting quality, reduce project costs, and it is an important problem which railway engineers pay attention to, it has important theoretical and practical value. The main problem of applying traditional optimization methods to lines adjusting optimal design is that the objective function is very complicated, which is difficult to solve. However, originated from biological evolution and generated from the combination of genetic evolutionary theory and optimization techniques, Genetic Algorithm is a non-traditional optimization method, which doesn't need differential coefficient or other assistant information of the objective function and restrictive function and it's easy to solve, it provides railway engineers a new tool for lines adjusting optimal design.The main work of this paper is to introduce Genetic Algorithm to the adjusting of existing railway plane and vertical section. The author's study mainly includes the existing railway plane adjusting optimization and vertical section adjusting optimization. In the plane adjusting design, according to the constraint conditions of curve radius, transition curve length, curve length, etc, a group of initial programs which meet the standards of design are created, then the control point restrictions are considered in the fitness function. By genetic calculation, the optimal project which meets all kinds of constraints is created. In the vertical section adjusting design, by considering of constraints conditions such as maximum grade of slope, maximum slope reduction, minimum length of slope, maximum adjacent grade difference, the elevation control, the plane and vertical section position, etc, a group of initial programs which meet both the restriction and the standards of design are created. And then after iterating the provided times, the optimal project is created.The study of the paper shows that, by applying Genetic Algorithm to the adjusting design of existing railway plane and vertical section, the absolute value sum and quadratic sum of removed distances and lifting-cutting amount are decreased by large degree, and the optimization result is obvious. It has important meaning of reducing the quantities and the costs of railway maintenance.
