Good education comes from excellent teachers. Educational development and improvement cannot depart from a high guality teacher ranks. Since English course was implemented in primary schools of the whole country in the fall of 2001, teachers who carried out the primary English education played the critical role in the process of promoting students'English ability. As an ordinary but unique group, they take the task of enlightening the students'English learning as well as lying the foundation for the whole life's learning. Can the existing teacher ranks satisfy the need of primary English education? So nowadays, it is necessary for us to investigate the present condition of teachers'quality.With the further development of the new round elementary curriculum reform and deeper understanding of educational importance, teachers'professionalization has been a topic of general interest in educational circles. It has been also the trend of the world teacher education development and the orientation of our country's teacher education reform. A research to this problem will be beneficial to teachers'quality improvement and have great theoretical and practical significance.Firstly, this paper combs out the theoretical achievements of professionalization, and provides a general framework of primary English teachers'special qualities, which is containing professional knowledge, professional abilities and professional affections, based on previous studies and considered grades and subject characteristics.Secondly, selecting 225 teachers as the object of study, with the help of inquiry and interview, this paper investigates realistic circumstance of primary English teachers'professionalization in Nanchang in terms of general situation, occupation shift, professionalization condition, professional development.Thirdly, this paper point out the causes of formation on the basis of current situation, such as unauthorized teacher status, excessive part-time teachers, imperfect pre-work education, indefinite standards for the admittance of an primary English teacher, defective post-work education,and too heavy work pressure. Fourthly, this paper provides some effective strategies for teachers'professional development: defining the professional position of subject, reforming teacher education system, improving teacher qualification system, accelerating reform of personnel administration, for instance.
