With the advent of the era of knowledge economy,Learning will become a continuous activity throughout life.The concept of lifelong learning is increasingly being accepted by more people.For its openness and flexibility characteristics,Open and Distance Education are welcome by adult learners to achieve their career development and lifelong learning.However, anything is with double-side,Although Open and Distance Education in possession of a huge economies of scale,at the same time,the attrition of the distance education learners has become an unavoidable reality of distance education institutions.Student persistence rate is not only related to distance education institutions to run the social and economic benefits as well as the reflection of their teaching and management level.Students persistence has always been one of the most important work of the distance education institutions abroad.From 1970s,many scholars began to pay attention to the reasons for dropping out of school and how to maintain the students.But in our country,after 2000,there are researchers to concern the issues,but there is not much research.How to maintain distance education students? What are the factors that influence students to maintain? How to improve the persistence rate of distance education students? Based on the above issues, this study selects the grass-roots units in school(Beijing RTVU East Campus) for case studies, exploring the characteristics and laws to maintain,analyzing the impact factors of RTVU students persistence.In this study,the researcher sorts out and summarizes the existing studies of distance education student persistence at home and abroad,Using of research institutions to analyze the the initial data of 2006(spring and autumn) of students enrolled in in Beijing RTVU East Campus,Using of questionnaires and interviews to investigate the factors that impacting students persistence.The study mainly reaches the following conclusions:(1) The first and second semester of the students enrolled is the critical period, which also is the"dangerous"period having a direct impact on student retention.(2) The persistence rates between differenct majors have significant difference,and majors closely related to work have higher student retention,and on the basis of the majors requiring abstract thinking and basis knowledge have a lower persistence rates.(3) With the exception of certain majors,the Beijing Dongcheng RTVU Open and Distance Education students maintain a higher student persistence rate.Tne main learning objectives of learners are to pass the examination,obtain a diploma.(4) At this stage,The Teaching Patterns in the Beijing RTVU Dongcheng campus is mainly based on face-to-face,carrying much little online teaching and learning, students feel less learning lonely.Analying the persistence of the Beijing RTVU Dongcheng campus,this study make a number of specific and feasible proposals:(1) RTVU educational institutions at all levels should further strengthen the nascent school education.(2) RTVU educational institutions at all levels should enhance professional and curriculum guidance for the new students.(3) The curriculum should be consistent with the requirements of application -oriented talents,focusing on the ability of students.(4) Carring out distance education students persistence research actively, Strengthen student support services to ensure that students complete their studies successfully.(5) Urging the students to correct a positive learning attitude,and actively strive to successfully complete their studies.
