Among the ethnic minorities of Guangxi, Yao nationality is second only to Zhuang nationality in population. For a long time, due to the slash-and-burn, outbound tillage production and lifestyle, Yao people lived a migrating life. During the long-term migrating course, a variety of braches was formed, and inhabitations were scattered. As a result, Yao nationality became one of the nationalities having numerous branches, different geographical cultures and branch cultures were formed. Taking the traditional holiday—"Zhuzhu Festival" of Bunu Yao(one branch* of Yao nationality) as the object of the research, Bama Yao Autonomous County of Hechi, Guangxi as the site of the research, this article makes a thorough and detailed study on the festive customs, the related "Miluotuo" belief and myths, and on the inheriting system of Zhuzhu Festival of Bunao Yao , mainly by means of field survey. From the aspect of festival, the author tries to make a deep analysis on the important function of festival in ethnic group recognition, explore through this cultural phenomenon such matters as the inheritance of traditional culture, the structuring of ethnic group consciousness, the coordination of ethnic group relations, with emphasis on the functions of traditional beliefs and traditional culture to cohesion of ethnic group consciousness.This article consists of an introduction and four sections. The introduction sets out the purpose and significance of the topic, the objects and methods of research, and so on. The first section mainly introduces the general human culture in the fields, including the overviews on physical geography and nationality. The second section is a research on festive customs of Zhuzhu Festival, and an analysis on the internal inheriting mechanisms of Zhuzhu Festival as well. The third section analyzes on how Zhuzhu Festival strengthens the recognition of an ethnic group, by exploring into the ethnic group's beliefs, historical memory and symbolic culture bore by the Zhuzhu Festival. The fourth section is about the value and practical significance of this research. By analyzing this specific case of Zhuzhu Festival, this section explores the problems on the inheritance and protection of current folk culture, as well as how to build up our socialist harmonious society with the strengthening of ethnic group recognition.
