The English Curriculum Criteria for the senior high school has greatly increased the vocabulary amount. What's more, the English Curriculum Criteria has explicitly proposed the development of the students' autonomous and cooperative learning abilities to form effective learning strategies. It emphasizes that learning strategies are the prerequisites for improving the learning efficiency and developing the autonomous learning ability. So English vocabulary learning strategies should attract our attention.The subjects of the project are the 93 senior high students from Lvsi Middle School in Qidong City. The study investigated the vocabulary beliefs and strategies used by rural senior high students based on a quantitative method combined with a qualitative one. The aim is to explore the overall pattern of the English vocabulary learning strategies used by rural senior high students in their vocabulary learning and their vocabulary learning beliefs. So that we can introduce and practice the effective strategies and help the students to find good methods suitable for themselves in vocabulary learning. Then they can improve their learning efficiency, fulfill their learning task successfully and lay a good foundation for their future study. The research wanted to find out:1. The category and frequency of strategies used by rural senior high students and their opinions on vocabulary learning beliefs.2. The difference between male and female students in vocabulary test scores, belief and strategy use.3. The difference between high-proficiency and low-proficiency students in vocabulary belief and strategy use.4. The difference between different proficiency levels in vocabulary belief and use of vocabulary learning strategies5. The relationships between vocabulary learning beliefs, strategies and vocabulary size.The findings of this research are: 1 .The study indicates that rural senior high students have changed the traditional belief that learning words is simply memorizing. They have realized the importance of learning words through use. They do apply some strategies to learn vocabularies, but the strategy level is not high.2. The study demonstrates that there is significant difference in vocabulary test scores, beliefs and strategies related to gender.3. Subjects from different score groups are different from each other in learning beliefs but no difference in vocabulary learning strategies.4. Subjects from different proficiency groups are significantly different from each other in vocabulary learning strategies but no difference in learning beliefs.5. There exists a certain correlation between vocabulary learning beliefs, strategies and vocabulary size of the students.
