The autonomous learning discussed in this article refers to the autonomous learning under the condition of school education. It means that the students achieve their self-development through their self-motivated and creative learning activities under the teachers' scientific guidance. It is a kind of educational practice of independent development. The ability of independent study is the ability by which the students obtain the knowledge, acquire the skills and achieve their self-development through their own efforts and planned independent learning activities. This article is composed of 6 parts. Part 1 has discussed the practical importance of the independent ability development of the students in the secondary professional schools. It has also generally described the current status of the research in the autonomous learning both abroad and at home. Part 2 has made a summary on the theory of autonomous learning, and has particularly defined the meaning of autonomous learning and ability of autonomous learning. It has also summed up the characteristics of autonomous learning and influencing factors of the ability of autonomous learning. Part 3 has given an investigation and analysis on the current status of the autonomous learning of the students in the secondary professional schools on the basis of the theoretical discuss. Part 4 has proposed some strategies on how to develop the students' ability of autonomous learning in the practice of chemistry teaching on the basis of theoretical study and survey, which provides a basis for the practice study in the following parts. Part 4 focuses on the study of practice. It has introduced some experiments in the development of the students' ability of autonomous learning in the chemistry teaching. It has designed some relevant teaching cases showing the characteristics of independent-study (For example, "The properties and application of the sodium metal", "The velocity of chemical reaction" and "The Extranuclear electron distribution and the periodic law of elements"). It has also studied the teaching practice and some interviews with the students and teachers and their practical results. Part 6 is the conclusion and consideration. Based on the study of practice, we think that it is necessary and practicable to develop students' ability of autonomous learning in the chemistry teaching in the secondary professional schools. It has analyzed the effectiveness of the application of the strategies in the development of the ability of autonomous learning. In the end, it has also given a prospect of the further research on the development of the ability of autonomous learning.
