Wushu is a traditional Chinese sport with rich distinctive Chinese feature and a wide range of social values. In Nanjing, many colleges are setting Wushu course as a P. E. optional course. A survey into teaching Wushu in colleges will help us better understand how college students think of Wushu and their actual participation in Wushu. This will shed some light on college P. E. teaching reform. To reveal the whole picture of Wushu teaching in colleges and to further develop traditional Chinese sports in college P. E. teaching, the current thesis conducts a survey on Wushu teaching in 20 colleges in Nanjing. After analyzing the data collected, the author gets the following findings:1. The objects of Wushu teaching set by colleges in Nanjing conform to the Guidance and Compendium for national college P. E. teaching, issued by the National Education Department. Wushu course setting, teaching contents and teaching periods arrangement in these colleges are all reasonable.2. Most of the Wushu teachers are young people, and a greater proportion of them are male. The research abilities of most professional Wushu teachers are not strong, but their practical teaching is well accepted by the students.3. In most of the investigated colleges, simplified version of Taiqi is offered and it is quite popular with the students. It is a general phenomenon that most of the colleges teach much on the practical performing of Taiqi but very little on theoretical knowledge concerned.4. There are very few Wushu groups or teams on campus, and even if there are a few, they seldom carry out activities or programs. Some colleges lack professional technological support.5. The traditional pure "technique assessment system" is no longer suitable for assessing the current learning and performance of college students. Wushu teachers come to realize the importance of assessing students' comprehensive abilities, and the pattern of test is gradually changing.6. Most of the students who choose to learn Wushu have definite purposes. They are to some degree satisfied with teachers' Wushu teaching, but at the same time they have some complaints about the dull contents, the monotonous teaching method and the playground and sports facilities of their colleges.
