This study explores the developmental characteristics of middle school students' goal orientations and learning strategies, using a questionnaire survey on 749 students who come from four grades in two middle schools. The four grades are respectively junior one, junior two, junior three, senior one and senior two. The conclusions of this survey are as followings:1. The Goal Orientations and Learning Strategies Survey (GOALS-S) has better reliability and validity. It includes four dimensions to examine the goal orientations and learning strategies of middle school students: social goals, academic goals, cognitive strategies and metacognitive strategies.2. The goal orientations of the middle school students who come from different grades show significantly differences. As well, the similar results can be found on social conformity, affiliation, approval, conformity, performance goal and mastery goal. The results indicate that senior middle school students get significantly higher scores than junior middle school students on these six dimensions, however, middle school students have no significant grade differences on the dimensions of the social responsibility. The work avoidance of junior one students gets higher scores than other grades, and the work avoidance of junior three students gets higher scores than senior two.3. The goal orientations of middle school students exist significantly gender differences. The social affiliation and the work avoidance of girls is significantly higher than boys, as the sense of social responsibility of boys is significantly higher than girls. In addition, the social status of boys is significantly higher than girls in junior three and senior two. Analyses of the social conformity, approval, performance goal and mastery goal not yield significant gender differences.4. The learning strategies of middle school students exists significantly grades differences. Specially, on the three dimensions of the elaboration, monitoring and planning, students in senior middle school get significantly higher scores than in junior middle school, however, on the three dimensions of the rehearsal, organization and regulating, junior three have no differences with senior one.5. The learning strategies of middle school students exists significantly gender differences. On three dimensions of the rehearsal, organization and planning, boys is significantly higher than girls. The results indicates that boys inclined to use the rehearsal, organization and planning in learning.According to the conclusions of this study, some recommendations are suggested on how to guide and train the goal orientations and learning strategies of students, as well as on education man...
