The capability to start a project refers to the abilities that the participants have to start a business, make profits and, accordingly, undertake its risks. It includes the abilities to evoke, perform, continue and accomplish the activities. The capability to start a project is similar to academic and professional capabilities since it needs both enterprise and the ability to undertake new ventures; The capability to start a project can also be different one, and lies between academic and professional capabilities, since it is much more pioneer. In essence, it is the same as the ability to innovate but more practical and active.Nowadays, it is very meaningful to train the undergraduates and cultivate their ability to start a project which is a effective way to improve the distressing circumstances in which it is difficult for the graduates to find a job, and can meet the needs to develop vigorously every walk of life, revive Chinese people, compete or cooperate in the globalized economic affairs, show the characteristics of local universities, and help the undergraduates to grow up and display the value and meaning of life.However, local universities, especially in the middle and western part of China, seldom instruct the undergraduates in starting a business, which is thought to be unimportant, or is only at the phase of beginning. Therefore, its theoretical research and instruction are greatly needed. After taking Yichun University, a local and comprehensive university in Jiangxi, as the sample and inquiring 700 undergraduates from various grades about their consciousness and abilities to start a project by self-made questionnaire, and surveying the instruction about how to start a project in Yichun University and other universities in Jiangxi by interview and informal discussions, the author draws some conclusions and puts forward some strategic suggestions about how to cultivate the abilities of undergraduates to start a project in this thesis.The thesis includes four parts:The first part is an introduction, which gives the reason to inquire into the problem and the backgrounds for this research, and displays the purpose, content, characters, methods and meaning of this study.The second part gives a theoretical analysis about some concepts such as the capability to start a project. The history of the instruction to start a project abroad and at home is traced back, and the characters to foster the undergraduates' abilities to start a project are also discussed here.The third part is a verified research. After investigating the undergraduates in Yichun University about their consciousness and abilities to start a project and inquiring the state of the instruction to start a project in Yichun University and other local universities in Jiangxi, the main reasons for the incapacity of graduates from local universities to start a project are analyzed.The fourth part gives some strategies to cultivate. According to the results of investigations, a series of methods to deal with the situation are brought forward to 'cultivate the graduates' abilities to start a project" in some aspects such as the inner and the outer environment of the local universities, the self-education of the graduates' makings and etc.
