Composition teaching and learning is a major part in Chinese language teaching and learning in secondary school. For the purpose of making composition teaching and learning more effective, this paper first presents the generalization and assessment, and then discusses some aspects concerned. Five sections are made of this paper. The first section is preface or introduction, mainly dealing with the aims and meanings of this research including the range and resource scope of this research. The second section is a generalization of this survey, mainly discussing the teaching beliefs, research of topic composition, the learner study, individualized composition, individualized teaching, assessment system, case study and writing aided by computer. The third section has five subsections: the learner and his or her interest study; keeping pace with modern times in composition teaching and learning; classical case study and teaching reform; the essence of composition teaching and learning; necessary courses of middle school students' composition and secondary composition teaching and learning. The fourth deals with thinking about composition in secondary school, exactly the analysis between heated theory and low effects, students as all-round individuals, the students' comprehensive abilities, writing as a necessity for students to live in modern society, and encouraging students to read more and read more interesting and useful books and get something out of them. The last is conclusion, which explains some unanswered issues.
