Scientific inquiry activities, an important task of curriculum reform in primary education, are required by students' all—round development. There are many inquiry activities in obligatory textbook of senior middle school which published by People's Education Press in May 2004.This research studied inquiry activities in that textbook. It is also concerned how the inquiry activities to be carried out in high school classroom. T he purpose of this r esearch is to provide some suggestions for carrying out the inquiry activities better in high school chemistry teaching process.The theoretical foundation of this study was formed by Constructivism theory, learning theory of Humanism, teaching theory of activity curriculum and the theory of scientific inquiry.The study deals with the design principles, characteristic of scientific inquiry in obligatory textbook chemistry 1 which published by People's Education Press. It also summarizes the condition and feasibility of inquiry activities. On the basis of analyzing the textbook, the author observed the chemistry classroom of 6 middle schools in Nanjing City. The author observed the regular chemistry classroom to find out how inquiry activities were implemented with the observation tables designed beforehand. As in open classroom teaching, chiefly by recording on-site image. In addition, the author had organized some interview with certaim chemistry teachers who were responsible for senior class one in Nanjing City.Based on analyzing the textbook, the author believes t hat scientific inquiry activities in the textbook follow certain principle and have their own characteristics as well. In terms of students' development, these inquiry activities are viable, and also advantageous to cultivate students' scientific manners. Based on the author's observation of chemistry classroom, the author discovered that regularly there were few inquiry activities conducted in the classroom teaching process, and the searching level was also lower. All open classroom teaching adopted the inquiry activity teaching, and the searching level was also higher. This signifies that teachers are agreed on the principle of inquiry activity, and have the inquiry consciousness as well. But their guiding level of the activity was not high.
