In the twenty-first century, the development of a country's economics and society depends mainly on the science literacy of its citizens. So, science education, especially the science education of primary and elementary schools, has become the focus of all the countries in the world. Now that the objects of the science education of primary and elementary schools are children, this thesis mainly discusses the significance of children's ideas in science education and analyses the implications of children's ideas in science for science teaching.There are four parts in this thesis all told: Part one explains the origin of the thesis writing, the theoretical background, significance and methods of the thesis as well. Part two studies children's ideas in the main area of science and furthermore, the characteristics of these ideas. As for Part three, this thesis focus on a kind of teaching model— inquiry teaching, as well as the conditions to implement it: qualified teachers, enough time for "follow-up" activities and favorable environment. And in the last part, the implications of children's ideas in science for science teaching. First, investigating children's ideas in science thoroughly ; then, helping the development of scientific ideas in three broader ways: helping children to test their ideas, providing access to alternative ideas and communicating and reflecting; the last but not the least important, this thesis argues that science teachers play an important parts in developing children's scientific ideas, illustrating when and how teachers should intervene with the purpose of leading children's ideas to scientific ones.
