The latter half of the twentieth century has witnessed a shift in foreign language teaching research from teachers' teaching to students' learning, since researchers have realized that the teaching materials and methods are only external cause, which become operative only through internal causes in the acquisition of knowledge and communicative competence in a foreign language. Shu Dingfang (1995) points out that by the study of the foreign language learners, we can get some idea of the characteristics of the foreign language learning process, so that we might devise courses and activities and create environments in accordance with the objective principles of foreign language learning.According to educational psychology, affect accounts greatly for foreign language learning efficiency and success, and different attitudes, motivation and personality characteristics affect the learning outcomes of the learners. In this paper, the author, on the basis of the achievements made by the scholars home and abroad, explored the effects of affective factors on foreign language learning. A small-scale survey about the affective state of the students was carried out, and tentative relations of students' affective state and language proficiency were found.This paper includes four parts. Part 1 introduces the history and the significance of affective teaching. Part 2 introduces the general theory of affective education, including definition of affective teaching , basic characteristic and theoretical basis of affective teaching. Part 3 is the main part of this paper. It deals with four problems: 1. Dealing with the teaching materials affectively 2. advantageous circumstances to affective education 3. Affectional communication between the teachers and the students 4. The establishment of the evaluation system which is matching the affective teaching of English education. Part 4 analyses and discusses the affective teaching in English classes. At the end of the paper, I discuss some problems exist in the English teaching .With the development of times, affective teaching attracts more and more teachers with its unique characteristic. In the teaching practice, it shows its prominent advantages. The author hopes to attract more and more educationists to pay closer attention to it, to promote affective teaching carried out and to complete teaching task of English with high quality.
