Vocabulary is an important part of language. Vocabulary learning has always been occupying an important position in language learning. Vocabulary teaching effect strongly influences the language teaching effect. Therefore, in language learning process, teachers and students should pay enough attention to vocabulary. However, vocabulary teaching in the rural areas still has many problems, such as low efficiency, wasting too much time, students’ poor performance in using the vocabulary. With the new curriculum reform going on, many English textbooks have a larger vocabulary size than before, for example, Junior English book go for it has 2500 words in the vocabulary list. This sets a higher demand on English vocabulary teaching in the rural middle schools. In order to help the teachers to improve the efficiency of vocabulary teaching, help the students learn the vocabulary easily and master the vocabulary memory strategy, this paper is regarding the psychological linguistics, cognitive psychology, lexicography as the theoretical basis, reviewing the researches of vocabulary memory, designing an experimental study on vocabulary memory strategies.The research participants are 5 English teachers and 101 students from two classes in a rural middle school. The research instruments are a vocabulary learning strategy questionnaire, two vocabulary tests, an interview for the teachers and a vocabulary memory strategies training experiment. Quantitative and qualitative methods are employed to research the current situation of the vocabulary memory strategies used in vocabulary teaching and its promoting effect on vocabulary learningThere are three questions involved in this research. The first one is what are the attitudes of the teachers and the students in the rural area towards vocabulary teaching. The second one is what is the relationship between vocabulary memory strategies and vocabulary learning effect. The third one is what are the effects of vocabulary memory strategies training on students’vocabulary learning.The research results show that the English teachers in the rural area do not pay enough attention to the vocabulary memory. Most of them enhance students’vocabulary memory through the way of repetition and leading the reading. Few of them teach the vocabulary memory skills to the students. Most students memorize the words through reading loudly and writing repeatedly. The teaching experiment in this paper shows that vocabulary memory strategy training will enable students form the habit of using vocabulary memory skills and improve students’vocabulary sizes. Meanwhile, through the analysis of students’ vocabulary levels and their commonly used memory strategies, the author points out different memory strategies have different influences on students’ vocabulary sizes.Based on the researches above, the author thinks that the importance of vocabulary teaching should be emphasized in the rural middle school English teaching. The position of vocabulary memory strategies should be enhanced in the teachers’ training program. In the training program, the teachers should be provided with systematic vocabulary knowledge which will improve their understanding of vocabulary. Teachers should also change the attitudes of only paying attention to the short term memory. In addition, students’ vocabulary memory abilities should be combined with the vocabulary competence. In this way, students can use vocabulary memory strategies automatically and flexibly to lay a solid foundation for their further language learning. |
