It is clearly stated in Standard Course Of Physics (Test Edition) for Senior Middle School that the purposes of this course covers the following: (1) to build up the desire of innovation, (2) to nurture the ability of practice, (3) to develop the fervor and interest of exploring and understanding nature, (4) to know the role physics plays in the progress of science and technology, in the development of culture, economy and society, (5) to lay a solid foundation not only for the students further development, but also for the formation of their scientific world view, healthy value system and humanistic spirit. The findings of a survey among the teachers and students show that although the course of physics pays attention to the nurture of the students' humanistic spirit in terms of educational ideals, new curriculum standard, new textbooks, but little research work has been done on how to put these into practice so as to achieve the expected goals in the actual teaching process. The present paper, therefore, is an exploration on how to make full use of the teaching materials and the experiments so as to enhance the nurture of humanistic spirit. The paper also attempts to examine the effects of the propose ways of teaching. The paper covers six parts. The first two parts start with literature review to locate the theoretical bases for the fostering of humanistic spirit and its feasibility and necessity. The focus is on basic theories humanistic spirit, including the nature of science and the related development both at home and abroad. The next two parts deal with the goals, basic principles and ways in the nurture of humanistic spirit as embodied in the teaching of physicsThe fifth part is an introduction to the study of experiments, including questionnaires, fieldwork, examination of effectiveness, etc. Classroom procedure, directions in experiments, studying by research and some other main teaching methods are covered in this study. A year of the teaching practice, together with analysis of students' examination results, shows that it is feasible to foster students' humanistic spirit during the teaching process, and teachers could put the methods into their own practice. The sixth part points out the weaknesses of the study as well as some further suggestions. Due to the limitations of the author, many problems remain partially solved or even unsolved. It is hoped that the present paper will stimulate further researches in this area and more valuable opinions may come up. Teachers of physics may be encouraged to pay more attention to the nurture of students' humanistic concern, their all-round development in order to meet the demands of modern education. It is no easy task to foster the students' humanistic spirit, and it cannot be achieved in a short period and therefore long-term efforts are required. On the other hand, the nurture of humanistic spirit is conditioned by many other factors, such as those from society and family. It needs the conscientious work of the whole society.
