As an extracurricular activity of mathematics teaching, mathematics contest has more positive educational values and functions. However, the reverse will happen if it is not properly carried out. The thesis is based on adequate teaching practice, and combined with questionnaires, thorough interviews, and test papers of the students. Through theory and practice, it reveals some problems in the present mathematics contest training of China: contestants are becoming younger and younger; the number of contestants is enlarging; model exercise practice is prevailing in contest training. Therefore, it is considered that1) While trainees are becoming younger and younger, it is unfavorable to develop students' ability and interest in mathematics, and learn knowledge. Furthermore, the function of selecting mathematical talents may not be realized.2) The growing number of trainees, which breaks the law of talents distribution, does no good to teaching students in accordance with their aptitude. It is easy to make many students fail in mathematics and affect the development of the real mathematics talents.3) Single model exercise practice will deprive the students of main role in learning activities so that they cannot get effective knowledge construction. And they will lose the interest in mathematics and destroy their creative thinking.In the end, the author puts forward several suggestions for improving mathematics contest training.
