For centuries, teachers' job responsibilities have been supposed to "teach, instruct, and explain". With the change of times, the evolution of the teacher profession requires teachers to take "research" as their own mission. As far as high school teachers are concerned, they are getting more and more alienated from theoretical research due to the nature of their work and the limitations of their own conditions. We are now facing the issues as to whether they need to become researchers, whether they can become researchers and how they become researchers. This thesis, based on theoretical expounding and practical investigations, attempts to provide answers to the issues. The research conducted in this thesis consists of four parts. Chapter One expounds in detail some fundamental issues concerning the scientific research pertaining to high school education. Chapter Two, through investigating the present status of the scientific researches on high school education, sets to pinpoint some problems and comes to some conclusions. Chapter Three focuses on the delineation of present status of the scientific researches in two high schools, thus revealing the picture of the scientific research activities in high schools. Chapter Four puts forth proposals for the high school headmasters, teachers and the work of the personnel relevant to the scientific research and education in high schools.Chapter One illustrates my own understanding of some basic theoretical issues about scientific researches on high school education. To begin with, I think scientific researches on high school education are the reflectional researches conducted by the teachers on the grass root level in the process of their educational and teaching practice. They are applied researches, which is different from the basic theoretical researches done by professional researchers. According to this definition, the aims of scientific researches on high school education should not be positioned to build theories, but to settle problems, the understanding of which helps the high school teachers gather courage to overcome difficulties in their research activities. Secondly, based on the positioning of the aims for scientific researches on high school education, I proposed that the major tasks for scientific researches on high school education are to study the basic theory, to learn various kinds of information and to reflect on the their educational and teaching activities. Thirdly, when considering the relationship between scientific research and teaching research, I hold that scientific research covers teaching research and the two should be combined in education management so as to remove some practical problems. Lastly, I think that organizations for high school scientific research need to reconsider their own positioning. Their tasks of top priority are not to conduct subject researches, but to serve the schools. In this chapter, I also present some views of my own on approaches, methods and appraisal of high school educational scientific researches. In Chapter Two, with the surveys based on questionnaires among the headmasters, high school researchers and high school teachers, I come to thefollowing conclusions. Both headmasters and teachers basically hold positive attitudes towards high school scientific researches with the opinions that it is of great significance to carry out researches in high schools. And under proper conditions, they are willing to do some relevant researches. Most headmasters reckon that it is necessary to set up internal research sections in high schools while teachers are generally satisfied with the high school scientific research efforts. Meanwhile, my research also reveals some problems. The headmasters are not clear about the positioning of the scientific researches in high schools. The scientific researches in high schools are placed in a dilemma. Schools have made sufficient efforts to push educational scientific researches but there is a lack of hardware as well as software. The existing researches fell short of p...
