The period of middle school is a critical stage of physical-mental development for teenagers. The developmental state in their psychology will affect their whole life. But the serious survival competition in modern society and the heavy stress for entering a higher school make the students' psychology become unhealthier. How to control owns emotion, behavior and mentality is an impending subject for modern middle school students. The study on the self-control ability of the students in modern society will be helpful for the students' self-administration and for the mental health servicer. And also the study will provide useful scientific material for the investigation of the self-control field. So we are to explore the characteristics of middle school student's self-control ability. Based on literature summary and opening inquiry investigation and adopted statistical technology of item analysis and factor analysis, this study formatted a questionnaire of middle school student's self-control ability with higher reliability and validity. After applied this questionnaire to 885 Shanghai students from the Prep. Junior grade to the senior grade two, the study analyzed the self-control ability's quality, it's differences in grade and sex, its developmental tendency and the correlation between self-control ability and school achievement. The results showed: 1. there was a normal distribution of self-control ability among middle school students; 2. the differences of self-control ability were significant in grad and sex; 3. the development of self-control ability was not stable which drops from junior grade one to the lowest of senior grade one, and showed an upward tendency again from senior grade two; 4. there was a high significant positive correlation between self-control and school achievement.
