Social Change In Southern Jiangsu Gender Division Of Labor

As a universal phenomena in different cultures and different historical limes, sexual division of labor is an important analytical catergory in term of which social sciences analysis the change of economical organization and social structure . Marx and Engels once saw sexual division of labor as an archtype of class struggle between the Owners of Productive means and labor workers.The village of China is in dramatically changing time, the great changes take place in social and economical structure of village, industrialization changes the distribution of labor in different productive sectors, and the forms sexual division of labor. This is both the process of expansion of totall resources and that of resource redistribution among different groups (including sexual group). Th is study (l)views the changing of sexual division of labor as a perspective or variable of the transformation of sexual interest structure in the process of social changes in South Jiangsu Province; (2)explores the condition of sexual division of labor in different economical organization in two villages of South Jiangsu Province, from pre-industrialization to industrialization; (3)describes the process from clear division through mutal permeability to "polarization" seperation; in order to answer the questions of: what have been taken place in sexual division of labor in rural industrialization? Are there any inner rules in these changes? fhat do these changes effect the social structure, especially sexual structure of village today and tomorrow?This paper shows (a) that patterns of sexual division of labor changes historically according to economical-productive structure and labor organization form, but man' s advantage and active position remains the same; (b)traditional sexual division of labor isahierachy system, industrialization Bakes this system institution; (c)that man's dominance depends on his advantage in traditional sexual division of labor, and his priority to grasp the productive and organizational resources and his priority to access to new technology; (d)Although there is a "verge" tendency in woman labor, but there also is a "centralized" tendency in it, new division system offers new development space for woman of village; and (e) the explanational system of sexual division of labor changes too, the emphasis shifts from natural difference between two sexes to technology, and that woman's identification with this explanational system is one of elements which fixed this new division labor system.
