The rapid development of technology of networking and multimedia accelerates the step of distance education greatly. This thesis recapitulated the development phases of distance education, took the real conditions of information networking into account, referred to other experience in this field and put forward my own project on the virtual experiment based on VRML (virtual reality modeling language). Combined the experiment conditions of The State Key Lab. Of Fluid Power transmission and control, this paper used the method to put the throttling experiment of a hydraulic system into effect. In this virtual experiment, the remote operators can do their experiment through the Internet/Intranet.The first part of this paper described the development of distance education, computer aided instruction and distance education at home and abroad. Then it studied some available projects of virtual experiment; the one based on VRML was mainly discussed. Taking the throttling experiment as an example, this paper made much detail study on how to construct a complete virtual experiment:(1) With the aid of VRML, combining strong functions of 3DS MAX, I designed a 3D model of this throttling experiment. Due to VRML's compatibility of multisystem and support of multiple browsers such as IE or Netscape Navigator, this model can be visited in different users who are hi different places.(2) Detailed studied the alteration between operators and the virtual world. Various sensors that are besotted in the 3D world through VRML can effectively sense all kinds of operators' behaviors; JAVA byte codes that are besotted in the interface between VRML and JAVA through the "script" node can finish difficult tasks. So the alteration can be concluded as follows: Operators touch parts of the shelf, and the JAVA byte codes execute the relative function, finally results are reported to the operators.(3) Through detailed studying the working function of the throttling experiment, I constructed a mathematical model of the experiment and simulated the model. Finally I took the virtual experiment based on model driving into effect.(4) Realizing the remote visit through Internet/Intranet. Because VRML and JAVA are both across operation systems, especially with the compatibility of JAVA byte codes, the remote clients can directly visit the virtual experiment. In one sense, it's just like a 3D website. At last, a summary of this thesis is given, and further research interests are also prospected, especially in concurrent working.
