The American character education movement since the rise of the 1980 s, caused a huge reaction in the community,many schools and people participated in it,helping the United States was the moral crisis through the ordeal played a role should not be underestimated,the community character education into an unprecedented attention and support,the community into an unprecedented attention and support for character education.Character Education thought gradually become the mainstream of moral education thought in American Schools,for solving moral problems,established moral system has a significant impact,provide reasonable and valuable refer to other countries for the development and reform of school education.Thomas Lickona is the main representative of The American Character Education thought,and he is actively advocates and practitioners of character education movement.He proposed character education based on respect and responsibility as the core virtues of the ten basic,submit a comprehensive moral model of moral cognition,moral emotion and moral behavior,proposed assessment principles and practical strategies for families,schools and society.Against Lickona of Character Education to understand and study, the challenge for the social values of our country at this stage of the transition period to the diversification of moral education in schools due to give some guidance and help.In this paper,by using the data analysis method,comprehensive analysis method and comparative research method for the Character Education theory of analysis and discussion,in order to provide useful insights for school moral education in our country.This thesis is divided into five parts,the first part is the introduction,defining necessary to study this subject,introduces the research status,research achievements and further research at home and abroad,The second part is the social background and theoretical basis of Lickona’s character education thought.Analysis of the social background,the United States imposed of the new conservative policy in the 80’s,advocates the revival of traditional families and values,and social existence of the serious problem of juvenile behavior.In the theoretical basis, to Aristotle’s virtue ethics, Kohlberg’s cognitive developmental psychology and Dewey’s pragmatism education theory as the foundation.The third part is the main content of Lickona’s character education,including character education elements, evaluation principles and practical strategies.Character education consists of three basic elements of moral cognition, moral emotion and moral behavior.He put forward the”eleven principles of effective character education”, it can be summarized as three aspects:orientation, effectiveness and integrity.He design and proposed the concrete practice strategy ofcharacter education,combine family, school and community.The fourth part is the evaluation of Lickona’s character education, including the contributions and shortcomings.The theoretical contribution is to absorb the traditional character education, draw valuable theoretical basis combine with practice, pay attention to the traditional virtue in modern practical value.In practice, Lickona established a new model of comprehensive moral education, the establishment of institutional mechanisms to protect the development of character education, promote the combination of family, school and community.The downside is conservative and idealistic, there is a certain resistance to the family and society.The fifth part is Lickona’s Character Education enlightenment on school moral education in our country.The moral education in our country should strengthen the education of core values with the guidance of Marx doctrine,pay attention to our country’s excellent traditional moral culture resources, strengthen the cultivation of students’ moral cognition and moral behavior,make families, schools and social interaction and cooperation, and jointly create a good moral environment.
