Mark Gottdiener is one of the major founders of new urban sociology. The contributions he made to the theoretical circle is not just a summary of predecessors’ experience and theory, but developing a new angel in understanding the model of contemporary urban space, even though his concept is based on provious academic research results. He thinks that current urban morphology of the United States should be defined as ‘ polycentric metropolitan area’. This view of urban development is a great step, no matter for theory of concentric circles, or for theory of fan pattern. He thought the space pattern of contemporary cities of America was not just concentrated on the spreading of one core, it should be the result of the interaction of the multiple cores. And every core of the cities master its special function, every part of the city is connected to each other, they are not independent of each other, working together makes the function maximized. Or we can say, this point of view clarify the core tendency of the model of space development of current city. Even though the downtown area is still progressing, the speed is slowing down, sooner or later, it will develop to its extraordinary boom. The cost and development prospect of center towns is so high that industries can not afford to that, which forced them to shift to someplace away from the center zone of the city. At the same time, another area with unique functions turn up. This development trend is worthy of our attention, which can help us cope with the upcoming new form of settlement space.Traditional views shows that the development of technology or environment master the development trend, while Gottdiener think all these point of traditional views can just make it more difficult in understanding the new form of settlement space. As far as he concerned, the United States lead the trend among the capitalism countries, because this new form of settlement space can only be found in America.He chose the word ‘decentralization’ as the main character of the settlement space,this descriptive vocabulary is considered as the core of the development. He stressed that we should focus on understanding the relationship between decentralization and late capitalism, because space pattern is dialectically related to social progress. In current stage of decentralization, the development of suburban areas dominated the allthe polycentric metropolitan area of America, in view of this phenomenon, the increase of space in the city appears to be without boundaries, and polycentric metropolitan area is the most proper description of the current form of settlement space.This article shows us the process of the polycentric metropolitan area, and the theory and model that Gottdiener has used as reference. The author tried to analyz the background of the new form of settlement space, and the reason why it was formed.All these work figuring the new settlement space of America is aimed to find enlightenment on urban development in our country.
