As a sub-system of the concept, geographical concept is an important part of the conceptual system. It is the abstraction and generalization of the essential attributes and characteristics about geographic things, geographic phenomena and geographic process, which is one basic element of the geography knowledge system and also one basic unit of geographical thinking. Therefore, learning and mastering of geographical concept is not only the foundation of understanding various geographic things and distinguishing the different geographic things, but also the premise of learning the knowledge of geographic principles and the important process and method of cultivating the abilities of abstract thinking.Learning of geographical concept is the students’ learning process of acquiring and mastering the concepts under the guidance of teachers and an important part and foundation of learning geography knowledge systematically and culturing geographic abstract thinking abilities. In the actual teaching of geography, various factors in the teaching process of geographical concept led to the appearance of many sorts of obstacles in learning geographical concept progress and the inability to construct a system of geographical concept of students, making it difficult to achieve the migration and application of systematical knowledge and the principles in geography. Therefore, to find kinds of learning barriers and factors and practical methods of breaking through these barriers from the student’s point of view from various aspects is significant for geography teaching.In this essay, on the basis of absorbing previous research, the author researches the learning barriers of geographical concept in high school, combining the actual geography teaching in high school with the scientific guidance of the basic theory of pedagogy and psychology and comprehensively using many research methods and means such as literature study, interviews, questionnaire, logical analysis and lessons learned and so on. The author discusses the significance of learning geographical concept for studying geography knowledge systematically and training thinking ability from the aspects of cognitive development, outlines the definition, classification and characteristics of geographical concept by combining with the existing achievements.The questionnaire part which is based on the deep survey of frontline teaching in Jiangsu and Anhui aims to discover the main learning difficulties and barriers existing in the students’ concept learning reality.In this paper, the author combines previous theoretical results, interviews, questionnaire analysis and personal experience and logical reflection, summarizes learning barriers of geographical concept in high school and discusses the methods to overcome each factor that results in barriers from both teacher and student angles.
