The comprehensive learning of Chinese is a brand-new item in the new course standards, and a product of the reform of new course of Chinese. Together with "literacy and calligraphy" "reading", "writing" and "oral communication", "the comprehensive learning" constitutes the five blocks of the course book of Chinese for junior high school students. The comprehensive learning of Chinese can not only help students to fully enhance their attainments in Chinese in the independent activities they are interested in, but also is an important approach for training students’ spirit of active exploration, unity and cooperation and bold innovation. Therefore, it should be actively advocated. However, in practical teaching, there still exists many problems as to the implementation of the comprehensive learning of Chinese at suburban high schools, which do not pay enough attention to this kind of learning. Suburbs are peripheral areas of urban areas. Because the economic level, social lifestyle and ideology of suburbs are not only different from those of traditional rural areas, but also from those of central urban areas, suburban high schools have their unique learning situations. Moreover, the achievements in the comprehensive learning of Chinese are often made in a macroscopic way in such terms as setting and developing courses and reforming teaching models, and they are mostly fit to be applied at more advantageous schools in the urban areas. Based on rural areas, some expert teachers also search for the methods and strategies for carrying out the comprehensive learning activities of Chinese. However, they are not very suitable for suburban schools located between urban and rural areas. This project aims to, based on suburban high schools, apply methods of investigation and experiment to find out and sum up an approach and method for carrying out the comprehensive learning activities of Chinese that is suitable for the learning situations of suburban high schools.Through questionnaire investigation into three high schools in Luhe District with 59 teachers of Chinese, six classes and 265 students, the author of this thesis has understood the disadvantages and advantages of suburban high schools in contrast to urban and rural ones, found out the problems existing in the process of promoting the comprehensive learning of Chinese and the appeals of students and teachers, put forward six countermeasures, and laid special emphasis on the following point:In the teaching practice, we should combine the subject of Chinese with local customs, cultural and natural resources, and contemporary vogues, and organically combine comprehensive learning activities with students’ life experience, so as to fully arouse students’ awareness of participation, make these learning activities become those in which students are really willing to participate, and derive more harvests from the comprehensive learning activities of Chinese.
