Shanghai and Taiwan are two highly international places. Under the geographic and cultural influences, people in both places attach special importance to English learning. The present English curriculums in these two places show their unique chatacter due to the different political factors and curriculum reform processes. Thus, comparing Shanghai and Taiwan English textbooks is an important channel for us to understand the differences in English curriculums and teaching ideas on both sides of the strait.In high school years, Shanghai and Taiwan spring up many editions of English textbooks. This thesis selects Shanghai New Century Edition and Taiwan Longteng edition as the two comparisons. The first chapter describes the research outline, and summarizes the domestic and abroad research review on English teaching materials. Chapter Two discusses the theoretical fundamentals of this thesis. Chapter Three adopts text analysis to find out the differences and similairites of educational philosophy, language cognition and social culture on Shanghai and Taiwan English Curriculum concept. Chapter Four and Chapter Five are the sections that analyze the structure and content features of the two editons of English textbooks specificly. These two chapters adopt a research method combining qualitative, quantitative, textual analysis and case study to make a horizontal comparison on factors of the textbooks’ content and structure. This part also explores whether the design of the textbook structure and content will promote the high school students’ language acquisition and their mental and physical development. Chapter Six is the conclusion part of this thesis. This section makes a conclusion of Shanghai and Taiwan high school English textbooks’ features respectively. Based on this, the thesis sums up textbook compiling advantages of the two places, expecting to provide references to textbook revision and usage for the two places from the comparative process.
