Argumentative writing is an important task in composition teaching during senior high school, and a good approach to critical thinking for the students as well. Mastering how to write an argumentative writing is the key to getting a good score in the college entrance exam and is helpful to developing students’ logical and writing ability. Great importance has been put on the argumentative writing in the teaching syllabus in this age.In terms of the tendency of the writing part in the national college entrance exam as well as Shanghai college entrance exam, the forms of writing vary from set-subject composition to material composition to topic composition to new material composition, among which material composition is significantly important both in national and shanghai college entrance exam. Although the style of writing is not literally required, only argumentative writing plays the part in making students set out their opinions or their feelings according to the given issues, so argumentative writing takes the leading role.However, the fact is that students have great trouble in writing a good argumentative writing for a lot of reasons such as students’ literary attainments, teaching method and the format of the writing units in senior high school, which are all influential factors for argumentative writing. This is an unavoidable task for us front teachers to solve.This research is aimed at a pointed and operational teaching approach to argumentative writing and illustrates how the problem is raised and compares different documents about composition teaching and relative researches home and abroad and deeply analyze students’ sample writing and the problem emerging in the current teaching, based on the present and ancient theories as well as the general rules of the Chinese writing of the college entrance exam, especially those of shanghai college entrance exam each year. A series of pointed and operational teaching approaches to argumentative writing will be put forward on the ground that some writing teaching is out of order and short of guidance and students’ reading is not enough to help them express efficiently in order to be helpful to the regular argumentative writing.This research is based on the regular writing and teaching. A series of teaching approaches are given to develop students’ interest in writing and literary attainments and put the writing teaching in order and introduce some teaching strategies and critical thinking required in argumentative writing. These teaching approaches should be pointed and scientific and operational in teaching routine so that will be of great help for the other counterparts.
