As a relative open composition, semi-topic composition has been introduced into Secondary Schools Admissions test in many provinces and cities, and receiving increasing attention from the examiners in recent years. It is a pity thing that the performance of many students to that kind of writing in the examinations is not so satisfying as we expect. Lacking of new ideas, content, and form is considered as the biggest problem. Research has concluded that teachers fail to introduce or apply effective approaches to train and improve their students’ skills in semi-topic composition writing mainly contribute to the current embarrassing situation. This dissertation discusses the necessity of introducing divergent thinking in semi-composition teaching, and provides that divergent thinking can not only, to some extent, improve the students’ writing performances, but also will bring new energy and life for semi-topic composition.This paper consists of five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, mainly displays the significance and background of this paper and the selected topic. Under the influence of the exam-oriented education, many Chinese teachers in their daily writing classes have strong utilitarian, which drives them to excessively emphasize composition tricks and skills, and make rigid rules to standardize their students’ writing in brain storms, selecting materials, essay construction, writing tips, and so on. This kind of "one size fits all" composition teaching method trains the students to be manufacturers of standardized essays, which kills the students’ personalities. Therefore introducing and applying the divergent thinking to writing classes has realistic significance. At the same time, divergent thinking in writing teaching also meet the requirements and aims of the "curriculum criterion".In the second chapter, connotation, characteristics and training style of divergent thinking are discussed. Divergent thinking, as one fundamental part of innovative thinking, is an open thinking model with different directions and many possibilities. Its feature is mainly embodies in three aspects: fluency, flexibility, and uniqueness. The connotation of the divergent thinking displays many vital concepts of the pedagogy and psychology, and possesses a rich and solid theoretical basis. We can gradually develop our ability of conducting divergent thinking in and out of the classes. As questioning mind, association thinking, imagination thinking and divergent thinking have an integral inner link, we shall develop students’ divergent thinking as well as the other three abilities at the same time.Chapter three explained the advantages of semi-topic composition and the necessity of conducting divergent thinking. The openness is the biggest advantage of semi-topic composition. However, it has certain shortcoming and restriction. Semi-topic composition can be divided into three types:dominant semi-topic composition, half hidden semi-topic composition, and half dominant and half hidden semi-topic composition. Semi-topic composition writing is coincident with the psychological characteristics of junior high school students. It can help them develop their autonomy, display their personalities, demonstrate their writing levels. It is necessary to apply divergent thinking in conducting writing in semi-topic composition. The application of divergent thinking in completing the task in semi-topic composition will not only enhance students’ passion and interest in writing essays, but also benefit the innovation of semi-topic composition itself.The following chapter introduces and discusses specific practical strategies of applying divergent thinking in semi-topic composition. To completely show the advantages of divergent thinking, three measures are considered to be effective. First of all, divergent thinking cannot live without a certain atmosphere and environment which inspires and encourages student to conduct divergent thinking. Secondly, teachers need to emphasize nothing but comprehend the profound meaning of "semi" while develop a topic for their students. Semi-topic composition makes it possible that students display their personalities by virtue of "semi". On one side, teachers need to give broad room for their students to conduct a semi-topic composition writing. On the other side, students need to fully take advantage of "semi" and divergent thinking to complete the topic so that they can create an innovative essay which displays their imagination and association ability well. Composition correction is another fundamental way for students to improve their writing skills and ability. We shall apply divergent thinking to improve our composition correction, which combine self-correction, student mutual correction, and teachers’ correction together. Finally, this chapter also enclosed a class design which help to cultivate students’ divergent thinking in semi-topic composition. The course design tries to apply this essay’s academic theories to classroom practices in order to receive sound effects.The fifth chapter is the conclusion of the paper. It mainly summarizes the concept and content. In addition, this part underline that divergent thinking, as a free, multidirectional and flexible way of thinking, can help to arouse people’s writing inspiration. Therefore, divergent thinking in semi-topic composition plays a big role in both academy teaching and practice aspects.The application of divergent thinking for semi-topic composition teaching has brought new vigor and vitality. We shall give full play to the advantages of the divergent thinking, let students experience the fun of writing, and improve their writing in semi-topic composition.
