Geography is a science with realistic foundation which has its own unique research and learning methods, it covers a wide content which includes geographical location, nature, economic, society, history etc and these subjects have the polytrophic characteristics because of the survival of the world is constantly changing.In contrast, the geography teaching materials are limited and updated slowly, in order to fully maintain strong applicability and practicality of geography, we must strive to fully grasp the extra geographic information, continuously update knowledge of geography and build a more rational structure of teaching materials in the teaching process. For keeping up with the pace of society, showing the geography of the times, the hot topics of society need to be incorporated in the geographical teaching of high school.《High school geography curriculum standards》 promotes four ideas of learning the geography which is useful to life and lifelong development so as to incorporate them in the teaching and improve students ability. Studying on geographical teaching in high school through the hot topics of society belongs tothe science-technology-society (STS) education category. Along with social changing, the contents, forms and methods of STS education are changing, which offer the direction of research on launch geographical teaching by utilizing the hot topics of society. In this paper, theoretical research on the launch of geographical teaching that uses the hot topics of society is carried on from the points of epistemology and educational psychology. meanwhile, through combining with own teaching practice of geography, the integration point of social hot knowledge and geographical knowledge are found, the main method and the selection principles of obtaining the hot topics are proposed, and the significance of developing geographical teaching through using of the hot topics of society is also discussed.. The purpose of this paper is firstly hoping to enhance the teaching level of teachers and enable students to apply geographical knowledge to explaining the hot topics of society and make their own judgments and decisions. Secondly, it also hopes to give a operational program about using the hot topics of society to help teachers achieve educational goals from knowledge, abilities, attitudes in geographical teaching.
