As two Middle East countries, The geographic closeness and joint history made Syria and Lebanon connect tightly. Gradually, they cultivated common identification; they think Syria and Lebanon belong to"Great Syria".Hafiz al-Asad was a fan of the"Great Syria"idea. After being the president of Syria, he grabbed the chance of Lebanese civil war to step in the Lebanon civil affairs. Through the army and spies stationed in Lebanon, he successfully controlled Lebanon and set up the Syria-Lebanon special relationship.Hafiz al-Asad was dead in 2000, the power was transferred to Bashar al-Asad. Bashar has the new idea and faced new global situation. He actively revised Syrian development strategy and focused on the economy development. But the revision made Syria's political-diplomatic interests have a clash with the economic interests. So Syria's dilemma comes out.The analysis of relationship between Syria and Lebanon refracts the Middle East political situation. Middle East is filled with religious conflict, ethnic conflict and sovereign disputes. It is a stage of great powers. At the same time, there are some changes. For example, the role of Pan-Arabism is weakened.
