China is actively engaging in the international society, and how to engage in the international society will be a new issue for China. However, the research in this field is still in the primary stage. This thesis chooses the theory of international regimes and the practice of China's engaging in the International Monetary Fund (IMF), trying to use the international regime theory to analyze the case of relationship between China and IMF and integrating history, theory and reality together, with the hope to provide some help for China engaging in the other international regimes. In the 21st century, finance is becoming the leading factor in the process of globalization, this thesis is practically useful for China who just entered WTO and is actively engaging in the international society.Through the study of China entering IMF, the conclusions drawn are as follows:First, it is the limitation of the international regimes that hindered the process of china entering IMF and caused the alienation of China and IMF. Second, it is the immense function that attracts China to enter the IMF-one of the most important international regimes. In 1980, China re-entered IMF successfully due to the following functions of international regimes: international regimes can lower the uncertainty and reduce the transaction cost in trading of one trading country which is a big attraction for all the countries. Last but not least, this case proved that internal factors played a very important role when one country entered a new international regime. As we all know, internal factors is the premise for international regimes to take effect because international regimes will depends on its member country to some extent. The rise of China to be a major power needs more active participation in the international regimes. China's participations in the international regimes tally with the requirements of China itself to become"a big responsible country". International regimes usually make some limits to their member countries, only with the accept of all the limits, China can get access to this international regimes, which means that China is willing to abide by all the rules and limitations and at the same time maintain them with all the other member countries in that regime. While China sets up its elegant responsible country image through international regimes, China also will get some benefits provided by it such as the reduction of uncertainty, transaction cost saving, more exchange on information between countries and the transparency of information.
