Peacekeeping Operations (PKOs) is one of the important and efficient means to maintain international peace and security by the United Nations. China's policy towards peacekeeping operations turned from the phase of understanding to active participation. With the opening-up to the outside world and growing participation in international affairs, China's position towards PKOs will be more active and realistic, and China will play a more important role in PKOs. Combined with the new characteristics and trends in the post-Cold War era, this paper gives a specialized study on China's participation in the PKOs. The first part deals with the history of China's participation in PKOs. The second part analyzes the motivations of China's participation. The third part explains China's role in the PKOs from three perspectives: task, function and geography. The fourth part discusses challenges brought to China in the new era and gives some suggestions. It is a realistic and beneficial choice for China to actively participate in selective PKOs.
