Since the reform and open policy, continuous progress has been made in social and economic development in China. Great changes have taken place in both urban and rural areas, while the living standards of the people have been remarkably promoted. But since the 1990's, esp. the later half the decade, the gap between urban and rural areas is getting larger. The problem concerning agriculture, farmers and rural area is worsening while urban area is growing rapidly. Now rural development issue has become the bottle-neck for our sustainable, stable and healthy social and economic development that needs being solved desperately. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to probe new concepts and approaches for the rural development at present. The first part of this thesis mainly gives a brief introduction about the problem of rural development, including its causes, typical phenomenon and etc.The second part provides elaborated analysis on the progress made so far in rural development and problems that we shall face in the new era, meanwhile the opportunities and challenges brought about by China's access of WTO is also discussed in this section. On the basis of previous analysis, possible solutions to the problems concerning rural development are proposed in the final section: (1) Empowerment of the farmers is the basic precondition; (2) Construction of farmers' support and protection system is a requirement; (3) Agriculture industrialization is a significant approach; and (4) Urbanization is a long-term solution.
