Zhejiang entered to the aging society in 1994 .The level of population ageing in Zhejiang is higher than other provinces of our country except Shanghai. By the middle of the century , one fourth people will be 65 or much older . As one of the most populous provinces in China , Zhejiang Province is beginning to face the problems of an ageing population .Old people usually have special need for housing. When they retired, they beginning to have plenty time enjoying their lives. It is investigated that over 40% of old people spent more than 20 hours in their own house every day in Hangzhou. So the satisfactory housing is the base of their happy life. In Zhejiang Province ,compared with the rapidly climbing quantity of old people, we are greatly lacking senior houses. When we develop common houses, we rarely consider the particular needs of the old people. Consequently, great inconvenience was brought them in daily lives. In this paper, seeing against a background of increasing ageing population, my main idea is following:First, 1500 questionnaires of " Present dwelling state and requirements of old people " were distributed and 1233 of them were returned in Hangzhou and Shengzhou. On the base of the investigation, the present dwelling state and satisfactory degree of existing housing which suitable for old people are described quantitatively and qualitatively.Second, the possible amount of beds needed for nursing homes are forecasted during 2005 and 2015 in Zhejiang Province. Proposals speeding up the pace of developing the senior housing are offered. Finally, learning from the developed countries' and cities' approaches on improving old people's living condition, methods and suggestions such as home modification, residential district environment design and "longevity" considered in common housing constructing are presented. Some results of this investigation have been published in "Housing Science(2002.9) and "Qiangjiang Evening Paper(2002.12.6)".
