In China, along with the rapid economic development, English has been included in one of the three basic disciplines as an indispensable tool for international contacts and has become increasingly attracted universal attention. English learning is an important task that one must face in his lifetime. So school-education needs to reach the target of teaching students how to study. In the process of teaching English, teaching the students how to learn and giving them effective learning strategies have been the effective way of enhancing the students' learning efficiency, lightening students'burden and improving the teachers'teaching. At the same time, learning strategies are the fundamentals symbol of measuring students whether to learn or to think. Students urgently need to master English learning methods and strategies and their teachers need to understand the broad framework of English learning strategies and corresponding teaching methods also. Therefore, the study of English learning strategies is of great theoretical and practical significance. Most of these studies in China have chosen ordinary college students as subjects. However, fewer researchers paid their attentions to Preparatory Undergraduates in Ethnic Minority College (PU)------a-specific group students. Many researchers thought the Preparatory Undergraduates'low English level was due to the cross-language, cross-cultural teaching. In the teaching Process, Chinese was used as the intermediary language, in which situation the dual language and cultural transforming made the Preparatory Undergraduates study English be more difficult. This thesis will investigate Preparatory Undergraduates English learning from the learning strategy's point of view. This study, using Chinese version of Oxford's (1990b) Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), investigated the strategy application of 67 Xinjiang min kao min Preparatory Undergraduates who were chosen from Minzu University of China. The general aim was to identify learning tendencies and patterns that were characteristics of this specific learning group. It was supposed to contribute to make a clear and comprehensive description of English learning strategy application of students at different levels, so that we can better understand individuals' needs, and in particular, help them to exploit strategies that may enhance their language learning.By comparing with other previous homogeneous research, I find that the results from the present study are almost consistent with those in other studies. For example, it is found that the frequency of overall strategy use of female students is significantly higher than that of male students, and that overall strategy use varies significantly by different grades. However, the study is different from others in some individual strategy. The study tried to discover some rules and questions, then analyze its reasons. Meanwhile, this thesis proposed some suggestions on how to raise the PU students'English learning strategies, such as transforming teacher' teaching idea; increasing teacher's consciousness on strategy training; arousing the PU students'interest and confidence in English study; strengthening the training and supervision, fostering students' strategy-using custom.
