In the field of freehand brushwork in traditional Chinese painting, Xie Haiyan's flower-bird painting, featuring in the external overflow of internal refined character through brush and ink, is the representation of traditional Southern School in China. The refined character of his painting is achieved by the smooth and implicit handling of brush, the vibrant and clear utilizing of ink and the restrained and controlled modeling as well as the refreshing and implicit composing of the picture.By XieHaiyan's distinctive academic thinking and deeply scholarship is emboldened. Lingnan Art School and his long time contact with scholars'flower-bird painting in the south of the Yangtze River exert great influence on this refinement. Besides, his colleagues Liu Haisu, Pan Tianshou have an impact on him. Meanwhile, he inherits some traditional Chinese ideas about life-painting into his works. They are the idea of painting using the method of calligraphy writing, the idea of'Moxi'(an idea of painting a picture without the restraint of the brush and ink and finishing the picture in a natural way) and the idea of'shizaohua'(an idea of picture-constructing by the unity of the form of the object things and the spirit of the painter),ink penetration on the performance of himself.
