Intellectuality is the one of the significant subjects in Wang Xiaobo's thought. Generally speaking, Xiaobo's intellectualism refers to his attitude to and adoration of intellectuality, which is in large part influenced by Russell's philosophical theory with its Western meaning and connotation.Chapter 1 focuses on the discussion of the basic concept and thought characteristics of Wang Xiaobo's intellectualism. In his view, the concept of and the attitude to intellectuality in traditional ethical culture is in effect the opposition and repression of intellectuality, while the Western scientific rationality culture shows the respect and love for intellectuality itself.Chapter 2 analyzes the influence of Russell philosophy on Wang Xiaobo's intellectualism. The intellectualism that Russell inherited from the Greek results in his notion of the knowledge ontology. Affected by Russell, Wang Xiaobo emphasizes the pure nature and self-sufficiency of knowledge, and sees the learning itself as a purpose.Chapter 3 illustrates the ideological convergence of Wang Xiaobo and Russell by synthesizing the influence study and parallel study. First, it discusses the mutualism relationship between intellectuality and liberty. Wang Xiaobo inherits and carries forward Russell's liberalism and rationalism, stressing the integration between liberty and intellectuality. Secondly, it analyzes the contradiction between the scientism and humanism, indicating both Wang Xiaobo and Russell hold the humanistic standpoint with an emphasis on the unity of the scientific value and the humanistic value. On the whole, the intellectualism can be said to be the result of the interaction between different cultures. Based on the comparison of Chinese and Western cultures, the thesis attempts to explore and elaborate on the relationship between Wang Xiaobo's intellectualism and Russell philosophy.
