As a special literary style, Qi originated from the imitation of Qifa written by Mei Sheng. The imitating writing lasted from Han Dynasty to Ming and Qing Dynasties, and finally, became an important phenomenon in the history of Chinese ancient literature. However, on the phenomenon, the academia always narrowed the visual field of studying to the pre-Tang period so as to lack the systematic and profound researches all along. The dissertation is an attempt at the research on Qi-style from the angle of general history. It is built on the base of original texts of Qi-style, and interprets the main characteristics and literary significance of Qi-style along the trace of the development of the writing.On the basis of former researches, Chapter One traces the origins of three elements of Qi-style which appeared first in Qifa via extending the horizon to such aspects as the pre-Qin literature, art, philosophy. And secondly, to interpret the phenomenon that absence of Qi-style writing in two centuries through comparing the writing backgrounds and contexts between Qifa by Mei Sheng and Qiji by Fu Yi.Chapter Two mainly discuss two most important phenomena of Qi-style writing in the Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties:the establishment of Qi-style and the relationship between imitation and change.Chapter Three doesn't only depict the declining state of Qi-style writing in Tang and Song Dynasties, and analyze its cause, but also unfold the innovated side which accumulates strength for the return of Qi-style writing mania in Ming and Qing Dynasties, according to concrete analysis of texts.With the works of Song Lian, Liu Ji and Wang Yi as main hubs, Chapter Four first reveals the influence of Qi-style writing in Yuan Dynasty upon in Ming Dynasty, and then displays the features of Qi-style in Qing Dynasty. Secondly, to expound the relationships among Zawen, Wenda, Fu and Qi-style under the background of trends of thought in style-discrimination.In short, Qi style is not only a classical case of the style evolvement of Chinese ancient literature, but also valuable in the study of thoughts history.
