The main contents of this paper are the functions and the evolution of hard material in painting, and it is separated into 6 parts: The first part explains the role of hard material as the displaying background in human beings prehistorical art and Chinese-western religious wall paintings. The second part explains the evolution process of hard material as an art expressing language in western modern artistic history. And the focus is analyzing the meaning from Paul Cezanne to Perspective Aesthetics Revolution as well as composition art for artistic history and the inner relations with comprehensive material painting and it also briefly analyzes Marcel Duchamp, Robert Rauschenberg, Anselm Kiefer's hard material's expressing language.The third part takes Schnabel's hard material paintings as a target, discussing and analyzing the historical traits of European mosaics and New Art Movement as well as the relations to Schnabel. The fourth and fifth parts through analyzing Wang Huaili, Buli and Schnabel's painting language, explains the functions of hard material on expending artists personal expressing language and the relations between hard material's own cultural nature and artworks cultural conception. The last part explains briefly the meaning of hard material for painting's continuously expending. Each part has its own emphasis but never leaves the core of the relations between hard material and painting, and it also proposes the following questions: what is the hard material in painting? How do hard material and painting interact? How are the relations? What's the function of hard material in painting? What's the evolution process? What's the function of hard material in painting's own expending?...
